Lennard Kämna sits in 9th place overall following the decisive mountain time trial on Giro's penultimate day

Today's challenging 18.6 km mountain time trial from Tarvisio up to Monte Lussari decided the general classification in this year's Giro d'Italia. The stage first led for eleven kilometres on slightly undulating terrain, before a brutal 7.3 km long and at times 22 percent steep final ramp up to Monte Lussari had to be taken on. T. Guernalec set the first real benchmark time of 48:35 minutes. German time trial champion Lennard Kämna, who was in 8th place overall before the stage, was convincing with a solid race. He was in 6th place at the first intermediate time check, but slowed slightly his pace until the finish and finished in 14th place in the end with a time of 46:41 minutes. This puts him in 9th place overall ahead of tomorrow's final stage. With a time of 44:23 minutes P. Roglič was the best time trialist today and took the day's victory, while moving into the pink jersey.

From the Finish Line

"As expected, this was a really difficult time trial. We prepared well for it and knew that I had a good chance of doing well. What can I say, other than I give it my all, on this last decisive day in the GC, and I’m pleased with my performance."- Lennard Kämna

"It was a brutal time trial. Today I followed Lenni on the moto, which was actually quite a good experience. Lenni really did his best. We only slipped one place in the general classification and I think that, all in all, he performed well today. Last week he was struggling with illness, and that might be the reason why he suffered over the last couple of days. Overall, we finish this Giro with a top-10 finish in GC and two stage wins, so I would say this was a successful Giro for us." - Enrico Gasparotto, Sport Director
