What are some of the small things that have a big impact in training, which may not necessarily be immediately obvious?Big impact variables would be how the&nbsp;athlete's approach to that day's training or to that week's training is or had gone. If they are&nbsp;super motivated and they are feeling good and all aspects of their private life are going well too, you'll always get a good training session or a good training week out of&nbsp;that athlete. Having external factors, be they positive or negative,&nbsp;can certainly have a significant impact on training. If a rider is experiencing family problems, their level of training is never going to be that good.&nbsp;&nbsp;As a coach what gives you the greatest job satisfaction? And what can frustrate you?What gives me the most satisfaction? It’s definitely seeing an athlete’s progress and happiness with training and racing. It doesn’t matter whether they are purely a domestique who carries bottles, if they are feeling fantastic having their nose in the wind and they're seeing improvements in themselves physically, or if they’re a rider who’s&nbsp;winning a race or winning a Grand Tour. That feeling is the same for every rider as long as that athlete progresses and is happy, then I am happy and this really&nbsp;gives me complete satisfaction in what I am doing. On the other hand, what frustrates me is a lazy athlete or an athlete who thinks he knows everything, questions everything&nbsp;and isn't open to discussion&nbsp;or education. They are often their own worst enemy.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/20230915_MW_Vuelta_Stage19_08159_d31b1c3af7.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Explain the importance of rest and recovery.&nbsp;Rest and recovery are probably, for me, some of the most vital metrics in any athlete's training. If you don't rest or you don't recover, you can’t adapt from your current training load and stimulus. However, it is hard for some athletes to rest. They don't often see the benefits and think if they have a day off that&nbsp;they go backwards when actually they won’t. It is during a rest period when typically your adaptation from training occurs. So for me, it is probably the most important metric in an athlete’s training program.&nbsp;What are the roles and benefits of indoor training, in the overall picture of structured training? Any traps or pitfalls athletes must watch out for there?Indoor training definitely has its place, and it has its benefits. For example, if an athlete is injured and they can’t go outside, it’s a really good tool to get&nbsp;back to fitness and back to health, as they need to train&nbsp;in a very controlled environment. You can also do other things indoors like focussing on TT&nbsp;positioning. However, there are also&nbsp;some pitfalls. With indoor training, you can’t get a realistic feel of being out riding, how the bike reacts outdoors in the natural environment and situations.&nbsp;You are in such a controlled environment that the experience&nbsp;overall&nbsp;doesn't really transfer to the outside world. If you need to go downhill&nbsp;at speed,&nbsp;you need to actually experience that in&nbsp;real life as opposed to only riding indoors. What I’ve seen is that a lot of these guys who are&nbsp;coming off online platforms have the power, which is fantastic, but they lack the basics such as bunch riding skills and bike handling. So while indoor training is good and has&nbsp;benefits, I do feel that&nbsp;too much of it can have a negative effect on a rider.&nbsp;Photos: Matthis Waetzel

Welche Einflüsse haben externe Faktoren auf das Training?Es ist sehr wichtig, Faktoren außerhalb des Radsports zu berücksichtigen.&nbsp;Zu diesen Faktoren zählen die Familie und das soziale Umfeld. Einen großen Einfluss hat die Art und Weise, wie der Sportler das Training an einem bestimmten Tag oder in einer Woche angeht. Wenn der Sportler super motiviert ist, sich gut fühlt und auch alle Aspekte seines Privatlebens gut laufen, wird er immer eine gute Trainingseinheit oder eine gute Trainingswoche abliefern. Äußere Faktoren, seien sie nun positiv oder negativ, können sich so natürlich erheblich auf das Training auswirken. Eine stressige Woche z. B. ausgelöst durch Familienprobleme kann sich schlecht auf das Training am nächsten Tag auswirken.&nbsp;&nbsp;Was bereitet dir als Coach die größte Freude an deiner Arbeit? Und was kann dich frustrieren?Was gibt mir die größte Befriedigung? Die Fortschritte und die Freude der Athleten am Training und an den Rennen motivieren mich natürlich. Dabei spielt es keine Rolle, ob es sich um einen Helfer handelt oder einen Fahrer der Rennen oder sogar Grand Tours gewinnt. Solange ein Athlet seine Leistung verbessert und Fortschritte macht, bin ich froh und zufrieden mit dem, was ich erreicht&nbsp; habe. Was mich hingegen frustriert, sind Athleten, die glauben, alles zu wissen, nie ihre Einstellung in Frage stellen und nicht gewillt sind Probleme zu diskutieren oder Neues aufzunehmen.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/20230915_MW_Vuelta_Stage19_08159_2e371ec78e.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Warum sind Ruhe- und Entlastungstage so wichtig im Radsport?&nbsp;Ruhe und Erholung gehören für mich wahrscheinlich zu den wichtigsten Parametern im Training eines Sportlers. Wenn man sich nicht ausruht oder erholt, kann sich der Körper nicht von den Strapazen regenerieren und an die aktuelle Trainingsbelastung anpassen. Einigen Sportlern fällt es jedoch schwer, dies zu erkennen. Sie sehen oft nicht die Vorteile, wenn sie für einen Tag mal nicht trainieren und befürchten Rückschläge bei ihren Trainingsfortschritten. Aber das ist nicht der Fall, denn in der Regel erfolgt eine positive Anpassung an das Training während einer Ruhephase. Für mich ist dies daher ein wichtiges Element im Trainingsprogramm eines jeden Sportlers.&nbsp;Welche Rolle spielt das Indoor-Training? Gibt es Vor- und Nachteile und was sollte man dabei beachten?Indoor Cycling kann ein wichtiger Bestandteil eines Trainingsprogramms darstellen. Wenn ein Sportler z. B. verletzt ist und nicht draußen trainieren kann, ist es ein wirklich gutes Tool, um wieder fit zu werden, da er in einer sehr kontrollierten Umgebung trainieren kann. Es gibt aber auch andere Möglichkeiten die Vorteile eines Smart-Trainers zu nutzen. So z.B. kann man die Sitzposition und Körperhaltung auf der Zeitfahrmaschine besser optimieren. Allerdings gibt es auch einige Nachteile. Bei einem solchen Training kann man kein realistisches Gefühl dafür bekommen, wie sich das Rad draußen auf der Straße oder während eines Rennens verhält. Man befindet sich in einer virtuellen Welt, sodass sich die Erfahrung auf einem Smart-Trainer nicht wirklich auf die Außenwelt übertragen lässt. Z.B. &nbsp;rasante Abfahrten lassen sich nicht simulieren und so kann Indoor Cycling eine Fahrt in freier Natur nicht ersetzen. Ich habe festgestellt, dass Fahrer, die viel auf Online-Plattformen trainieren, zwar über die nötige Power verfügen, aber dass es ihnen an den Grundlagen fehlt, wie z. B. an Fahrtechniken und dem Umgang mit dem Rennrad. Online-Plattformen haben Vorteile in bestimmten Situationen, aber ich glaube, dass sie auch einen negativen Effekt auf einen Athleten haben können.&nbsp;Fotos: Matthis Waetzel

BORA-hansgrohe’s U19 team has once again underlined its exceptional position in international junior cycling with numerous top results.Twelve victories at UCI level, numerous medals at national championships and silver at the world championships - Team Auto Eder's record in the 2023 season is impressive. Accordingly, the team's season summary is also positive: As in the past two years, they were one of the best U19 teams in international junior cycling - and from the beginning of the season at the end of March to the end of the season at the end of September, they were able to score numerous top results.Already in April, the U19 team of the WorldTeam BORA-hansgrohe achieved an outstanding success when Paul Fietzke (Germany), Theodor August Clemmensen (Denmark) and Martin Bárta (Czech Republic) took a triple victory in the overall classification of the renowned Cottbus Junior Tour and also won all four stages through Karl Kurits (Estonia), Paul Fietzke and Martin Bárta. Other notable successes include the stage wins by Kryštof Král (Czech Republic) in the Junior Peace Race and the Eroica Junior Cup. Clemmensen's second place in the renowned one-day race Gent-Wevelgem and Paul Fietzke's fourth place in the classic Paris-Roubaix are also notable.The team's record in national and international championships is equally impressive: Paul Fietzke, Kryštof Král, Karl Kurits, Tamás Hancz (Hungary) and Duarte Marivoet (Belgium) each won the silver medal at their countries' time trial championships. Kryštof Král and Paul Fietzke also won the road championships of their nations. The latter achieved probably the greatest success for Team Auto Eder this year: at the Cycling World Championships in Scotland at the beginning of August, Fietzke was able to claim the silver medal in the road race after an outstanding race.The Team Auto Eder athletes are now looking forward to the winter break before starting with their preparations for the new season at the beginning of November.Quotes“Team Auto Eder has once again shown that it is one of the best U19 teams in the world. Mit zahlreichen Top-Erfolgen hat die Junioren-Equipe des WorldTeams BORA-hansgrohe einmal mehr ihre Ausnahmestellung im internationalen Junioren-Radsport untermauert. Entsprechend zufrieden fällt die Saisonbilanz aus.Zwölf Siege auf UCI-Level, zahlreiche Medaillen bei Nationalen Meisterschaften und Silber bei der Rad-Weltmeisterschaft – die Erfolgsliste des Team Auto Eder in der Saison 2023 kann sich sehen lassen. World Championship Silver Medal Caps Off Successful Season for Team Auto Eder

We spoke with John Wakefield about his role as a Coach at BORA-hansgrohe.&nbsp;Tell us a little about yourself and how you became involved in coaching in pro cycling?I'm originally from Cape Town in South Africa. I was born and bred there but I’ve been living for the last four years in Girona, Spain. I&nbsp;got involved in coaching through motocross but during my sporting life I always enjoyed the Monday – Friday more of the training side of things vs the actual racing.&nbsp;I was racing and&nbsp;got&nbsp;injured and couldn't ride anymore, so I started coaching and training athletes.&nbsp;I rode&nbsp;a bicycle&nbsp;for rehab and started racing when I couldn't race motocross&nbsp;anymore. Through this&nbsp;I met my current business partner and very good friend who was deeply involved in the cycling and sports performance environment, and we started a coaching / performance&nbsp;company together.&nbsp; As things develop in business, we both got the opportunity to work with&nbsp;a WorldTour team and improve their performance department and here we are.&nbsp;&nbsp;What are the typical training loads and types of training for a rider in the team, how does this differ depending on the type of rider and how close he is to a race he has targeted?Prescription and training load is obviously different for every athlete. You need to understand&nbsp;what the athlete can tolerate in terms of stress, load and stimulus, from that you&nbsp;need to build their training programs based on the outcome and the profile of the rider. So, if I take as an example, a climber / GC rider&nbsp;like Cian&nbsp;Uijtdebroeks. His training is obviously very different to what I would prescribe Nico Denz, who is more like a rouleur, a super domestique, a&nbsp;strong rider in the medium mountains who can also sprint very well from a small group. So his training is more specific to his role and his job within the team and his profile as an athlete. When you take Cian for example, he is someone, even though he's young, who can&nbsp;handle a very, very big training load and stimulus. And his training is more focused towards his outcome of being a classification rider. Every rider can always improve, even a small percent year on year mostly, so it is identifying what is needed and applying that in training. As the saying goes “Train the athlete” as one methodology doesn’t work for everyone.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/20230916_MW_Vuelta_Stage20_08923_3599ac874c.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Which physiological factors you think are crucial for a rider to be successful in modern cycling?That's a good question. With regards to physiological factors, I do think cycling has changed over the last five years or so. So I think there are&nbsp;two very important factors here. First of all,&nbsp;having a very strong mental approach because all the racing now is just so hard from start to finish and it's very aggressive. And the other attribute relates to the recovery process, which is very crucial for&nbsp;an athlete. A very good ability to recover from training and&nbsp;racing,&nbsp;especially in stage races or during the classics season, is crucial.&nbsp;I would put those&nbsp;two&nbsp;attributes down as those necessary for an athlete in today's sport of cycling.&nbsp;Athletes’ mental strength and resilience is also becoming increasingly important, do you have any guidance or advice you recommend to your athletes?&nbsp;Mental strength and resilience are really important in cycling today.&nbsp;I&nbsp;believe in the approach that if you can&nbsp;suffer longer than the rider next to you, you can ultimately win. I try to get riders to embrace the suffering of cycling so much that if&nbsp;they enjoy that suffering, they really&nbsp;feel alive especially after a good result despite what that result might be. Athletes either have that mental resilience or they don't. Yes, you can improve here, but ultimately either you have it or not. This is why some lesser gifted riders&nbsp;succeed further, even if they are&nbsp;not as physiologically gifted as others.&nbsp;You’re of course at races and training camps with riders, but also work remotely with them. How do you stay in contact, measure training results/data, provide feedback, and make changes that way?If I’m not physically with an athlete, my&nbsp;contact with them occurs via phone calls or messenger platforms.&nbsp;If it's detailed information or just a short message, it’s&nbsp;typically via WhatsApp or iMessage depending on the athlete. The&nbsp;main type of feedback I give them comes once I've done some data analysis. Then, I’ll chart&nbsp;the data and send it to them via email. However, the way we monitor tests with the team, we utilise the performance platform&nbsp;Today’s Plan. All the riders’ data is uploaded there, so that we can&nbsp;analyse it, and&nbsp;track, for example,&nbsp;progression and fatigue.&nbsp;The way&nbsp;I monitor fatigue and progression in an athlete is with a submaximal fatigue test, which I typically do&nbsp;every 7 to 10 days with an athlete. That gives me an overall understanding of the&nbsp;wellness of that athlete. Data gives me power and heart rate, but it also gives me a subjective feeling,&nbsp;for example, about&nbsp;how that athlete has slept or what his mood or stress levels are along with his weight. The most objective way is simply asking an athlete “how do you feel?”,&nbsp;and&nbsp;based on that,&nbsp;I would correlate that answer and information with training data to make sure that they are progressing and are on the right track going forward.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bora-hansgrohe.com/news/wakefield2-en" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Part 2 of this interview here!&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;Photos: Matthis Waetzel

Wir sprachen kürzlich mit John Wakefield über seine Rolle als Coach bei BORA - hansgrohe.&nbsp;Erzähl uns ein wenig über dich und wie du zum Profiradsport gekommen bist?&nbsp;Ich komme ursprünglich aus Kapstadt in Südafrika. Ich bin dort geboren und aufgewachsen, bin aber seit vier Jahren in Girona, Spanien, ansässig. Ich bin eigentlich über den Motocross-Sport zum Coaching gekommen, aber während meiner sportlichen Laufbahn hat mir das Training von Montag bis Freitag immer mehr Spaß gemacht als die eigentlichen Rennen am Wochenende. Nachdem ich mich bei einem Rennen verletzte hatte, musste ich den Motocross aufgeben und so begann ich mit Coaching. Nach meinem Unfall fuhr ich viel Rad in der Reha und da ich keine Motocross-Rennen mehr fahren konnte, wechselte ich zum Radsport. Dadurch lernte ich meinen jetzigen Geschäftspartner und sehr guten Freund kennen, der im Radsport- und Sportleistungsbereich sehr engagiert war, und wir gründeten gemeinsam ein Coaching-Unternehmen. Wir hatten viel Erfolg damit und erhielten die Gelegenheit, mit einem WorldTour Team zusammenzuarbeiten.&nbsp;&nbsp;Wie sieht das typische Trainingspensum für einen Fahrer im Team aus und wie unterscheiden sich die Trainingsprogramme je nach Fahrertyp?Das Trainingspensum ist natürlich für jeden Athleten anders. Man muss verstehen, was der Athlet in Bezug auf Belastbarkeit, Ausdauer und Leistungsfähigkeit tolerieren kann, und sein Trainingsprogramm auf Grundlage seiner sportlichen Daten und seines Profils als Fahrers festlegen. Nehmen wir als Beispiel einen Bergfahrer/GC-Fahrer wie Cian Uijtdebroeks. Sein Training ist natürlich ganz anders als das von Nico Denz, der eher ein Rouleur ist, ein Edelhelfer, ein starker Fahrer in den mittleren Bergen, der auch sehr gut aus einer kleinen Gruppe heraus sprinten kann. Sein Training ist also auf seine ganz spezielle Rolle und seine Aufgabe im Team abgestimmt. Cian zum Beispiel ist jemand, der, obwohl noch sehr jung, eine sehr, sehr hohe Trainingsbelastung wegstecken kann. Und sein Training ist mehr auf das Ziel ausgerichtet, sich als Klassementfahrer weiterzuentwickeln. Jeder Fahrer kann seine Leistungsfähigkeit erhöhen, also geht es darum, zu erkennen, was nötig ist, und seine Trainingseinheiten dementsprechend anzupassen. Wie man so schön sagt: "Trainiere den Athleten", denn die Trainingsmethoden und das Pensum müssen individuell auf den Athleten abgestimmt werden.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/20230916_MW_Vuelta_Stage20_08923_34956c3f04.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Welche physiologischen Faktoren sind deiner Meinung nach entscheidend für den Erfolg eines Fahrers im modernen Radsport?Das ist eine gute Frage. Was die physiologischen Faktoren betrifft, so hat sich der Radsport meiner Meinung nach in den letzten fünf Jahren verändert. Ich glaube, dass es hier zwei sehr wichtige Faktoren gibt. Erstens muss der Sportler eine gewisse mentale Stärke besitzen, denn die Rennen werden heute vom Start bis zum Ziel sehr hart und sehr offensiv gefahren. Der andere Faktor betrifft den Erholungsprozess, der für einen Athleten sehr wichtig ist. Die Fähigkeit, sich vom Training und Rennen zu erholen, ist besonders bei Etappenrennen oder während der Klassiker-Saison von entscheidender Bedeutung. Ich würde diese beiden Faktoren als sehr wichtig für einen Athleten im heutigen Radsport bezeichnen.&nbsp;Die mentale Stärke und Belastbarkeit eines Athleten werden immer wichtiger. Welche Ratschläge gibst du deinen Radsportlern?Mentale Stärke und Belastbarkeit sind heute im Radsport sehr wichtig. Ich glaube, dass derjenige gewinnt, der am meisten leiden kann. Ich versuche, die Fahrer dazu zu bringen, dass sie Leiden im Radsport als etwas Positives ansehen. Radsportler&nbsp;müssen große Schmerzen ertragen, sich überwinden, um zu siegen. Dafür ist auch mentale Stärke nötig, aber die lässt sich nur bis zu einem gewissen Grad trainieren. Letztlich besitzt man diese mentale Belastbarkeit oder nicht.&nbsp;&nbsp;Du begleitest die Fahrer bei Rennen und bist bei Trainingslagern dabei, aber du arbeitest auch von zu Hause aus mit ihnen zusammen. Wie bleibst du in Kontakt mit deinen Athleten, analysierst Daten und gibst ihnen Feedback?Ich bleibe oft per Telefon oder auf Messenger-Plattformen mit ihnen in Verbindung. Wenn es um detaillierte Informationen oder um eine kurze Nachricht geht, geschieht dies über WhatsApp oder iMessage. Nachdem ich eine Analyse durchgeführt habe, schicke ich die Auswertung den Fahrern per E-Mail. Innerhalb des Teams benutzen wir die Plattform Today's Plan. Alle Leistungsdaten der Fahrer werden dort hochgeladen, sodass wir sie analysieren und ein Trainingspensum festlegen können. Wir erfassen auch Daten von einer Leistungsabnahme durch Ermüdung. Ich führe normalerweise alle 7 bis 10 Tage diesbezüglich Messungen durch. Die Kenntnis dieser Werte ist für ein angemessenes und effektives Training essenziell. Dadurch erhalte ich einen Gesamtüberblick über das Wohlbefinden des Athleten. Die Daten geben mir Aufschluss über die Leistung und die Herzfrequenz, aber sie vermitteln mir auch ein subjektives Gefühl, z. B. darüber, wie der Sportler geschlafen hat oder wie es um seine Stimmung oder sein Stressniveau sowie um sein Gewicht bestellt ist. Am objektivsten ist es aber auch, den Sportler einfach zu fragen: "Wie fühlst du dich?" Auf diese Weise kann ich dann die Antworten mit den Trainingsdaten korrelieren, um sicherzustellen, dass der Sportler Fortschritte macht und auf dem richtigen Weg ist.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bora-hansgrohe.com/news/wakefield2-en" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Teil 2 des Interviews hier!</a>&nbsp;Fotos: Matthis Waetzel

BORA - hansgrohe concluded the Vuelta a España with the victory of Lennard Kämna on stage 9, who with that also achieved the Grand Tour triple, his second place on stage 15, the third place of Nico Denz on the final stage and two GC top-10 places with Aleksandr Vlasov and Grand Tour debutant Cian Uijtdebroeks.&nbsp;Sports Director Bernie Eisel and four of our riders look back on the three weeks of racing in Spain:&nbsp;The last three weeks were a bit up and down and that also is reflected in the results. We had expected a bit more, but we are satisfied. It was a nice stage win by Lenni, who also finished second on another stage despite his late crash. That is an incredible result. We fought our way through technically in the overall standings, although some of our riders were perhaps also a bit hampered due to health reasons. Otherwise, the shared leadership between Aleks and Cian worked well. The atmosphere in the team was, as expected from the "Band of Brothers", also good during these long three weeks. On the penultimate stage we had expected something more, but unfortunately it didn't quite work out. There was no chance for us in Madrid, so we tried to enjoy the parade in Madrid on the final laps."- Bernie Eisel&nbsp;"Of course for me the highlight of my Vuelta performance was my stage win on Stage 9. It was a pretty hectic day with all the echelons, and I was pleased to have been able to make it into the break and eventually pull away. I had worked pretty hard in the past few months in the leadup to this, and it wasn't necessarily after the Giro with a few setbacks, so it was a rewarding result for sure. Then there was of course Stage 15, when I was yet again in the break, and then leading the race, only to crash just ahead of the finale. It was a disappointment to not be able to finish off that performance with another stage win, but I was right up there and had it not been for the crash, I would have had a very good chance. I gave it one last go on the penultimate stage, where I made it into the break again. The legs were good there, but just not good enough to make the decisive move. All in all, my Vuelta performances this year were encouraging and definitely give me confidence. Thanks as well to my teammates for their support on the road, and also to the staff that accompanied us the past few weeks for all that they do." -Lennard Kämna&nbsp;"I'm pretty pleased with how my first Grand Tour went. It wasn't an easy one for sure, but I came here expecting that. We can all definitely feel the legs after three weeks of racing, and I have to say that I didn't have the best start, with saddle soreness issues and then becoming a bit sick. But I pushed through and gave my best and produced a good performance. I have to say it wasn't easy to get through those days, I really had to grit my teeth and block the pain out of my mind, so it's good to finally cross the big finish line in Madrid. It quickly became cleat that Jumbo Visma was going to dominate the race, and in the face of that, I tried to ride sensibly and not go over the limit to chase down their attacks. I think that was the best way to manage the race situation. In the end, we succeeded in our goal of taking a top ten result, and to finish eighth is a really solid ride of which I can be pleased. I'm looking forward to seeing how I can continue to improve from here onwards and build on this performance in the future. Thanks to my teammates as well, not just for their support on the road, but also for the advice they've given me on how to take on such a big race. And of course last but not least, thanks to the team staff as well, I really appreciate your support over these past weeks."- Cian Uijtdebroeks&nbsp;"A top ten in a Grand Tour is always a solid performance. After having to leave the Giro earlier this year, I wanted to give my best and have another go, and coming here I was in pretty good form, with strong results at San Sebastian and the Vuelta a Burgos in particular. This was for sure not an easy Vuelta, with so many riders competing here also in good form. Unfortunately, I have to say that I didn't have the best start to the race, as I fell a bit sick, which made performing at the level I had envisaged that extra bit tougher. Nevertheless, every mountain stage was about sticking with the GC group, which I did pretty well. It's obvious that Jumbo Visma was dominant in the race, and all we can do in that situation is our best, to ride like we had planned, and give everything we had. Big thanks to everyone in the team for their support, as always, it wouldn't have been possible without your support."- Aleksandr Vlasov&nbsp;"This was my third Vuelta, a race that I usually really like competing in. We knew heading into the race that it wouldn't be easy, and compared to last year's parcours, for example, it was even more demanding. I had a more free role in the team here, which I was quite looking forward to. However, in the end I wasn't able to make it into the decisive moves or breakaways, which is something that I would have liked to have done. I'm sure there will be new opportunities coming, where we'll see where we can improve on this performance here to produce some strong results. But we'll take this as an experience, and I must say it was good to be able to support the rest of my team to finish with two riders in the top ten and also a stage win." - Sergio Higuita

BORA - hansgrohe beendete die Vuelta a España mit dem Sieg von Lennard Kämna auf der 9. Etappe, der damit auch das Grand-Tour-Triple erzielt hat, dem 3. Platz von Nico Denz und zwei Top-10 Plätzen in der Gesamtwertung durch Aleksandr Vlasov und Debütant Cian&nbsp;Uijtdebroeks.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sportlicher Leiter Bernie Eisel und vier unserer Fahrer ziehen Bilanz nach den drei Wochen in Spanien:&nbsp;&nbsp;„In den letzten drei Wochen ging es auf und ab und das zeigte sich auch im Ergebnis. Wir hatten etwas mehr erwartet, aber wir sind zufrieden. Es war ein schöner Etappensieg von Lenni, der auch trotz seines Sturzes dann noch einmal Zweiter geworden ist. Das ist schon ein unglaubliches Ergebnis. Wir haben uns in der Gesamtwertung durchgekämpft, obwohl die Leistungen einiger unserer Fahrer gesundheitsbedingt beeinträchtigt waren, und auch die geteilte Führungsrolle zwischen Aleks und Cian hat gut funktioniert. Die Stimmung im Team war, wie man es von der „Band of Brothers" erwartet, während dieser drei Wochen gut." - Bernie Eisel&nbsp;„Der Höhepunkt meiner Vuelta war natürlich der Sieg auf der 9. Etappe. Es war ein hektischer Tag mit Windkanten, und ich war froh, es in die Ausreißergruppe zu schaffen. Ich hatte nach dem Giro mit einigen Rückschlägen zu kämpfen, aber die harte Arbeit in den letzten Monaten hat sich auf jeden Fall gelohnt. Dann war da noch die 15. Etappe, auf der ich erneut in der Ausreißergruppe war und das Rennen anführte. Leider stürzte ich kurz vor dem Finale und das war bitter. Ich war ganz vorne dabei, und ohne den Sturz hätte ich sicher eine sehr gute Chance gehabt. Auf der vorletzten Etappe habe ich es ein letztes Mal versucht und konnte mich wieder absetzen. Die Beine waren gut, aber eben nicht gut genug in der entscheidenden Rennphase. Alles in allem war meine Leistung bei der Vuelta in diesem Jahr ermutigend und gibt mir definitiv Selbstvertrauen." - Lennard Kämna&nbsp;„Ich bin ziemlich zufrieden mit meiner ersten Grand Tour. Es war kein einfaches Rennen, aber das habe ich auch erwartet. Wir alle spüren die Beine nach drei Wochen, und ich muss sagen, dass ich nicht den besten Start hatte. Ich hatte Probleme mit dem Sattel und wurde dann etwas krank. Aber ich habe mich durchgebissen und trotzdem mein Bestes gegeben. Ich musste die Zähne zusammenbeißen und den Gedanken an die Schmerzen aus meinem Kopf verdrängen. Ich bin froh, dass wir endlich die Ziellinie in Madrid erreicht haben. Am Ende haben wir unser Ziel, ein Top-10-Ergebnis zu erzielen, erreicht, und der achte Platz ist eine wirklich solide Leistung, mit der ich zufrieden sein kann. Ich freue mich darauf zu sehen, wie ich mich von hier aus weiter verbessern und in Zukunft auf diese Leistung aufbauen kann." - Cian Uijtdebroeks&nbsp;&nbsp;„Eine Top-Ten-Platzierung bei einer Grand Tour ist immer eine gute Leistung. Nachdem ich den Giro Anfang des Jahres verlassen musste, wollte ich es noch einmal versuchen. Als ich hierherkam, war ich in ziemlich guter Form und hatte zuvor in San Sebastian und bei der Vuelta a Burgos sehr gute Ergebnisse erzielt. Dies war sicherlich keine einfache Vuelta und leider hatte ich nicht den besten Start in das Rennen. Ich wurde etwas krank, was meine Leistung beeinträchtigt hat. Nichtsdestotrotz ging es bei jeder Bergetappe darum, an der Gruppe des Gesamtführenden dranzubleiben, was mir auch ziemlich gut gelungen ist. Es ist klar, dass Jumbo Visma das Rennen dominiert hat, und wir konnten in dieser Situation nur unser Bestes geben, also so fahren, wie wir es uns vorgenommen hatten."- Aleksandr Vlasov&nbsp;„Dies war meine dritte Vuelta, ein Rennen, an dem ich immer sehr gerne teilnehme. Wir wussten vor dem Rennen, dass es nicht einfach sein wird, denn im Vergleich zum letztjährigen Parcours waren die Etappen in diesem Jahr sogar noch anspruchsvoller. Ich habe hier eine freiere Rolle im Team gehabt, worauf ich mich sehr gefreut hatte. Am Ende konnte ich aber nicht in eine Ausreißergruppe kommen oder in den entscheidenden Rennphasen mitmischen. Ich bin mir aber sicher, dass es wieder neue Gelegenheiten geben wird, wo wir meine Leistung verbessern können, um starke Ergebnisse zu erzielen. Wir haben hier Erfahrungen gesammelt, und es war schön, dass ich meine Teamkollegen hier unterstützen konnte. Die Vuelta mit zwei Fahrern in den Top-Ten und einem Etappensieg zu beenden, ist nicht schlecht." - Sergio Higuita
