The Spanish race weekend with the one-day races in the regions of Murcia and Almeria is in the books. These are two races with a different character: while in Murcia often a small group or even a soloist prevail, Almeria is traditionally decided in a bunch sprint.
Accordingly, BORA - hansgrohe travelled to the Iberian peninsula with a squad that can handle any terrain. For Marco Haller, Bob Jungels and Jordi Meeus it was the start of the season - Sergio Higuita and Dani Martinez are back on European roads from Colombia. After this weekend, all BORA - hansgrohe riders (with the exception of Florian Lipowitz and Primož Roglič) have now clocked up their first race kilometres of the year.
Top 10 in both races - that's the result after the weekend. Sergio Higuita crossed the line of the Vuelta Ciclista a la Region de Murcia in 6th place. DS Christian Pömer: "Yesterday we rode for victory. Dani showed that he is one of the strongest climbers. He was at the front of the race for a long time. In the end, Dani and Sergio finished with the first chasing group."
In his first sprint of the season, the Clasica de Almeria, Jordi Meeus finished in 8th place. Christian Pömer: "Today we once again experienced very good teamwork. We knew that with Marco we only had one lead-out rider for Jordi. So we wanted to give Jordi the best possible support in the technical last kilometers and then hope that the right door would open for him at the right time. That didn't quite happen, he was a bit boxed in."
The racing block continues from Wednesday on with the Volta ao Algarve. "We are travelling on to Portugal with the same line-up. We'll also take the team spirit and the team's riding style from the weekend with us. Even though we have last year's winner in Dani, we know the high-calibre line-up for the Algarve. We are aiming for a top position in the GC and a stage win," says Christian Pömer, looking ahead.
