Jonas Koch puts up spirited fight at Brugge - De Panne

Cobblestone sectors on narrow roads, rain and wind-prone passages were sure to toughen up this one-day race in Belgium. In a star-studded field of sprinters, BORA - hansgrohe had planned to back Sam Bennett. However, his form was not at 100 per cent after having recovered from recent illness, in addition to his crash at Milano-Sanremo, and he ultimately had to abandon the race. As the peloton split under tough weather conditions with about 50km remaining, Jonas Koch found himself in the lead group of 18 riders. Despite a flat tire at an inopportune moment shortly ahead of the finale, the German managed to catch up with the leaders again. He ultimately crossed the finish line in 16th place after J. Philipsen took the win from a four-man sprint.

From the Finish Line
"It was a very tough race and very nervous from the start. Unfortunately we had a bit of bad luck when Danny had a flat at a crucial moment, and shortly after then came the decisive split. I made it into the first group, but then unfortunately had a puncture later on. In the end, I didn't quite have enough to be right up there, which of course I'm disappointed about. On the other hand, I'm pleased with how the legs felt after the break I took due to illness." - Jonas Koch

"It was a pretty tough race due to the wind conditions and the rain. The team was to support Sam today. However, unfortunately, his form is not 100 percent yet after his illness. He doesn't have all his strength back at the moment, but he's on his way there. Danny, Ryan and Jonas performed particularly well today. Before the finale, it looked as if Jonas would be able to achieve a top-10 finish, but he was unfortunately slowed down by a flat and thereby lost his chances for a top placing. Without this bad luck we were sure that with his speed he could have definitely finished in the top ten. But we saw that the guys did quite well today and we'll get straight into tackling the next races again." - Torsten Schmidt, Sports Director
