Lennard Kämna defends 6th overall after 18th stage of the Giro

The first of three difficult days started with a mountain finish in the Dolomites. A 161 km long stage over two 1st and two 2nd category climbs required good climbing legs from those trying to push further up the general classification. There was a hard fight for the break on the first climb, where seven riders eventually went clear from the peloton. Back in the Maglia Rosa group, with 8km remaining, Jumbo - Visma attacked, and only G. Thomas and E. Dunbar could keep up with the pace, while Lennard Kämna had to drop back. At the front of the race, T. Pinot and F. Zana fought for the victory from the breakaway group, with the Italian taking the day's win. Lennard crossed the finish line 1:07 minutes behind Roglič and Thomas, defending his 6th place overall.

From the Finish Line
"Today was another hard day. I got through because the team supported me well until the last climb. I rode my own pace because I knew it would be very, very hard for me. But I'm very happy with the result and happy that I'm still in sixth place overall." - Lennard Kämna

"Today was the first of the last three hard stages in the mountains. Before the Giro we did a recon of this stage with Lenni, so he knew the route pretty well. Our goal was to stay with the strongest GC riders and not lose much time to the top 5 riders. The guys suffered quite a bit on the first climb but still managed to support Lenni well. As for Lenni, I think he rode quite intelligently. He knew the roads and knew exactly where the steepest parts were. He rode at speed and is still in contention for a good place in the general classification. So I am very happy with his performance." - Enrico Gasparotto, Sports Director
