Ide Schelling with a 7th place on Belgium Tour opening stage
The opening stage of the Belgium Tour 2021 led the rides from Beveren to Maarkedaal over 175,3 kilometers. After an easy start there was a breakaway group of 8 riders which could escape from the peloton and reached a maximum advantage around three minutes. As the riders entered the three final laps, the decisive attacks started and the peloton broke in pieces. For BORA-hansgrohe Ide Schelling was trying to follow the attacks but missed the first group which reached the finish line about 30 seconds in front of the reduced pack, where Ide could sprint to a 7th place.

From the Finish Line
“As expected it was a crazy finale today with a hard circuit. We planned to keep Ide and Pascal in a good position to be in place when the attacks started. The whole team did a good job and kept them in position. Unfortunately, Pascal suffered from a crash in the middle of the race, so he could not keep the pace of the reduced pack. Ide did a good job and could sprint to an solid 7th place. No perfect day for us but still everything possible for the next days. After tomorrows timetrial we will see how we can go on in the GC with Ide.”- Jean-Pierre Heynderickx, Sports Director
“As the start into the stage was quite relaxed, we knew that the finale will be extremely hard. So our goal was to be in position when the final laps start. I had perfect support by the team and could follow the attacks by Remco Evenepoel two times in a row but the third time was too much for me. All in all I am happy with my 7th place and how the legs felt. I am really looking forward to tomorrows time trail and to give everything for a good position as it will also be important for the GC. ” – Ide Schelling
