Despite best efforts, no top finish for BORA-hansgrohe on the Tour of the Basque Country’s third stage

The 176 km-long third stage from Amurrio to Emualde featured two ascents: one third category climb and one second category climb, as well as a short but steep final kick. The catch of the day’s break saw a series of attacks from the reduced group of favourites on the final climb. BORA-hansgrohe was up front with Maximilian Schachmann and Emanuel Buchmann, but after a strong 6-man group distanced itself from the thinned-out field, the two German climbers were unable to counter. The day's winner eventually came from the reduced group, with Pogačar crossing the finish line first, and Max and Emanuel finishing over 30 seconds in arrears, in 14th and 18th place respectively. As a result of today's stage, Max slipped from 6th to 9th place in the general classification. After a crash in the last kilometres, teammate Wilco Kelderman unfortunately had to abandon the race.

From the Finish Line

"We knew that it would be a tough stage. After the various attacks from the reduced group on the last climb, the pace was quite high, and with the steep gradients, the six riders in front were just too strong, and so that was all we could manage today." - Maximilian Schachmann

"It looked very good for us until the final climb. Our riders stayed together and made quite a strong impression. Unfortunately, there was a crash before the final climb and as a result Wilco had to abandon the race due to injury. It’s a shame to lose him again to a crash, especially with him having just come back from injury. Regarding the rest of the race, Max put in a good performance. We were perhaps hoping for a bit more, for instance, that he could make it into the front group of six that broke free in the end. He's now slipped to 9th in the GC, but still put in a solid performance today." - Jens Zemke, Sports Director
