Just off the podium: Emanuel Buchmann takes a strong fourth place at Gran Piemonte

BORA - hangrohe continued its race schedule in Italy today with its participation in the 103rd edition of Gran Piemonte. This one-day race is often considered a dress rehearsal for upcoming Il Lombardia on Saturday. The last part of the race in particular was expected to constitute a real test of ability. The peloton had to traverse 183 km between the start in Agliè and the finish at the iconic Santurario di Oropa. With the long climb up to Nelva at approximately 30 km before the finish, and the final ascent to Oropa (10 km, 7%), a climb which has featured several times in the Giro d'Italia, the finale certainly presented a challenging profile. After only 10 km, the breakaway of the day had formed and the six riders out front were able to quickly put around 5 minutes between themselves and the field on the flat part of the parcours. The race situation remained largely unchanged over the next 100 km until UAE Team Emirates started to pull at the front of the main field and the advantage of the breakaway began to dwindle to less than 2 minutes. On the ascent to Nelva, the peloton lead by Team Ineos began sweeping up riders from the breakaway until the last one was caught. On the final climb of Oropa, Emanuel Buchmann managed to make it into the front group, while several others fell off the back. On the last steep 3 km-long section, he moved further to the front, but when E. Bernal attacked on the final kilometre, he was unable to go with the Columbianm who ultimately went on to win the race. Emanuel crossed the finish line in fourth position after his strong performance.

From the finish line

“I felt significantly better today. On the last climb, Team Ineos set the pace and when Bernal attacked, no one was able to follow him. I was then overtaken in the last 25 metres, and so was able to take fourth place. After not having felt so good yesterday, I’m satisfied with today’s result, and hope to be able to go even better at Il Lombardia.” - Emanuel Buchmann

“Shortly before the finish, it looked as though Emanuel would be able to take second place behind Egan Bernal. Unfortunately, he was overtaken by two other riders over the last few metres to the Oropa Sanctuary. Despite this ending, today’s performance was a strong one from both Emanuel and the team. Patrick Konrad was also able to keep up with the reduced group of around 20 riders until 5km ahead of the finish. Now, we’re focusing on the end of this year’s season and Il Lombardia on Saturday.” - Jens Zemke, Sports Director
