Gregor Mühlberger finishes in 11thplace after an incredible teamwork on the last stage of the Binck Bank Tour.
The final stage of the Binck Bank Tour saw several attacks right from the start. Binck Bank Tour stage winner Gregor Mühlberger was the whole day surrounded by his teammates and showed a great performance on today’s brutal stage. After teammate Rudi Selig gave everything, the Austrian rider finished in 11th position and moved up to 8th in the final GC.
The final stage was with more than 210km and 18 climbs the queen stage in this year’s edition of the Binck Bank Tour. The race took the peloton from Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure over 212.7 demanding kilometres to Geraardsbergen. The finale consisted four cobbled climbs like the Muur van Geraardsbergen, which had the peloton to tackle three times on a 25.6km circuit.
The Team Tactics
BORA – hansgrohe had to two riders in the top ten in the overall and wanted to secure these positions with another offensive ride today. Maciej Bodnar and Gregor Mühlberger were the men for the day, both received the whole support from the team to defend their top ten positions in the general classification.
After an earlier group was caught by the peloton, a group of seven riders escaped after 64km of racing and built up a maximum gap of four minutes. But as expected the breakaway fell apart on the final laps in Geraardsbergen. BORA – hansgrohe did a stellar job and protected Gregor perfectly. The Austrian rider was the whole race in a good position and as the race headed into the final laps, Rudi Selig pulled hard for his teammate. The last lap saw several attacks but it was M. Matthews (Team Sunweb) who took the win ahead of G. van Avermaet. BORA – hansgrohe rider Gregor Mühlberger crossed the line in 11th position, only some seconds behind the stage winner. Following this great result, Gregor moved up 8th in the GC.
01 M. Matthews 4:38:36
02 G. van Avermaet +0:01
03 Z. Stybar +0:03
11 G. Mühlberger +0:09
