Gooikse Pijl: Jordi Meeus finishes 8th in a hectic finale

After the Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen on Friday and the Primus Classic on Saturday, BORA – hansgrohe completed its Belgian racing weekend with the Gooikse Pijl. After yesterday’s victory, Jordi Meeus was again the captain of the German squad, especially since the expected outcome of the race was again a bunch sprint. The 199-kilometre-long one-day classic was mostly dominated by a breakaway of five riders, which could build up a maximum lead of four minutes. However, the escapees were caught with eight kilometres to go, thanks to the work of mostly Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl and BORA – hansgrohe. Unfortunately, the finale was very hectic, and Jordi lost position in the final three kilometres. That’s why he couldn’t contest for the win today and finished 8th, while the Belgium rider Gerben Thijssen took the victory.

From the finish line

“After yesterday’s victory, Jordi was again our captain for the expected bunch sprint. The race itself was very controlled, especially Shane Archbold did a fantastic job at the front of the peloton. Unfortunately, Jordi was a bit too far behind when the bunch entered the finish straight, that’s why he couldn’t reach a better position in this hectic finale. However, with yesterday’s victory in the pocket, we can still look back on a successful racing weekend here in Belgium.” – Jean-Pierre Heynderickx, Sports Director
