Tough day for BORA-hansgrohe at the Vuelta: Jai Hindley moves down in GC, while Sam Bennett leaves the race

After the transfer to the Mediterranean coast and the second rest day, the Vuelta continued today with a 31.1 km long individual time trial between Elche and Alicante. The mostly flat course with no particular difficulties benefited the riders with a lot of power and for the GC riders, time losses had to be kept to a minimum. Unfortunately, BORA - hansgrohe lost Sam Bennett today, who tested positive for Covid in an antigen test, after which the team decided to withdraw him from the race. Wilco Kelderman delivered a solid performance, crossing the finish line after 37:04 minutes, thereby clocking the best time for the team from Raubling. Jai Hindley, who was ninth overall heading into the stage, finished two seconds slower than his Dutch teammate and dropped back to 13th place in the overall standings.

01 R. Evenepoel        33:18

02 P. Roglic                 +0:48

02 R. Cavagna             +1:00

43 W. Kelderman        +3.46

44 J. Hindley               +3:48

45 S. Higuita                +3:51

From the Finish Line

"We knew that the time trial wouldn't be easy, particularly because it was quite flat. In the end, Jai lost a few positions in the GC. Perhaps we had expected a little bit more from him today. Despite that, he put in a good performance in the first part of the course, and then lost some time in the second part. However, we'll keep fighting, we still have several mountain stages ahead of us, so we won't give up despite the setback of today." - Sylwester Szmyd, Coach
