Hindley, Kelderman and Buchmann show strong on Vuelta Burgos first mountain stage

With the Picon Blanco a first real mountain test awaited the riders today at Vuelta a Burgos. An early break formed after 30km and built a proper lead until the foot of the Picon Blanco. There the race exploded and P. Sivakov attacked together with A. Lopez while Hindley, Kelderman and Buchmann did set the pace in a first chasing group. All three BORA – hansgrohe climbers made a strong impression and still chased hard when after the downhill Lopez was dropped and Sivakov joined the remaining rider from the break. The duo managed to hold off the chasing group by 28 seconds until the line and P. Sivakov is the new overall leader with Jai sitting in 5th and Wilco in 8th place.

From the finish line

“Fortunately, the crash yesterday had no big impact and I felt quite good today. When Sivakov attacked I didn’t have the legs to follow. Still, I think all three of us have been quite strong. We tried to keep the pace high on the climb and also pushed after the downhill. Sivakov was just too strong today, but we are still in contention and personally I can feel my legs get better every day.” – Wilco Kelderman

“The guys rode a strong race today. It was clear that the Picon Blanco will be a launch pad for some attacks, therefore position at the foot was important and especially Gampi did a good job there. Then we have been in a good position in the reduced bunch, but when Sivakov attacked only Lopez was able to follow. After the downhill we really chased hard with all three guys but only EF was also working. Sivakov was really strong, and we couldn’t bring him back. Still, I think on the last day the race is still open and we still got a lot cards to play.” – Jens Zemke, Sports Director
