Martin Laas sprints to third place at Clásica de Almería

The 36th edition of the Clásica de Almería led over 183.3 kilometers from Pueblo de Vicar to Roquetas de Mar. After a breakaway group could break away immediately after the start, they got caught by the main field shortly afterwards. Also a second attempt to escape by a four-man leading group had little success in moderate winds along the Andalusian coast. As a result the main peloton tackled the final. On the 6 km long final laps the BORA-hansgrohe riders positioned themselves in the front part of the pack. Several crashes were the result of a hectic finale. Jordi Meeus was also involved in one of them. He suffered a deep cut in his hand, but was able to finish the race without serious injuries. Thanks to a strong team effort and good leadout work, Martin Laas was able to open the final sprint in a promising position and secure a third place with the reigning European champion Giacomo Nizzolo winning the race.

From the Finish Line

“I can be pretty happy with a 3rd place in the first race of the season. We actually planned to do the sprint for Jordi, but he was involved in a crash in which I also almost got caught. Since he didn't come back, we quickly switched to me and the team did a great job to keep me up front and to get me into position. In the last corner I had the perfect rear wheel with Nizzolo, but was a little disturbed by another rider and got a little bit stuck. Nevertheless, I still felt strong enough to launch my sprint and was able to secure the third place. " - Martin Laas

“Today luck wasn't always on our side, but we're not unhappy I would say. At first we planned to prepare the sprint for Jordi. Unfortunately he was involved in a crash 15 kilometers from the finish and we had to switch to Martin very quickly. The team worked well together and always stayed up front to counter attacks and put Martin in a good position. Unfortunately we lost our strong leadout guys Pösti and Bodi due to punctures in the last kilometers. This is why the sprint preparation did not go ideally. Nevertheless, Martin looked good and was able to do a strong sprint and secure a good third place for us. " - Jean-Pierre Heydnderickx, Sports Director
