Martin Laas sprints to victory on the opening stage of the Tour of Slovakia

The first day of the 64th edition of the Tour of Slovakia was divided into two parts. In the morning, the riders took on a 106km-long route around Žilina, the hometown of Peter and Juraj Sagan. The middle part of the stage was quite demanding, featuring four climbs, while the final 30 km were flat. Seven riders broke away after 20 km in the saddle to form the escape group of the day. BORA - hansgrohe controlled the race right from the outset, with the leaders being caught again in time for a sprint finish. In the finishing straight, Martin Laas prevailed against the other fast men of the peloton to take the stage victory, his first win of this season. Teammate Jay McCarthy finished in 4th place, while Jempy Drucker took 7th position.

In the afternoon, a 7.1 km individual time trial on flat terrain around Žilina was the next challenge to be taken on. Andreas Schillinger opened the race against the clock for BORA - hansgrohe, while Martin Laas rolled off the start ramp as our final rider. Jempy Drucker set the best time out of our squad, crossing the finish line in 8:13 minutes, and finishing in 11th place. J. Steimle set the winning time of 7:55 minutes.

From the Finish Line

"The race was actually quite hard because there were a few climbs, but ultimately the peloton covered them in a good pace, and the guys supported me very well today. In the final few kilometres the race became hectic, and there were some attacks, but Patrick and Jay were able to neutralise these. With 250m remaining, I was in fifth position, and then I launched my sprint about 100m later, and was able to pull past the other sprinters and cross the line first. I’m really happy to have taken the win and rewarded my teammates for all their work today.“ - Martin Laas

"This is a really nice win for Martin. The finale suited him quite well, so our plan was to ride for him today. The guys supported him well the entire day. After around 50km in the saddle, Juraj and Andreas hit the deck, but were able to continue the race soon afterwards. In the last kilometre, Patrick, Jay, Jempy and Oscar did a fantastic job to bring Martin into a good position for the finale, and in the end he was able to repay them with the victory.“ - Jean-Pierre Heynderickx, Sports Director
