Martin Laas takes third place on the third stage of the Czech Tour

With a length of 209,8 kilometres, the third stage of this year’s Czech Tour was not only very long but also very challenging. The hilly course contained five climbs, additionally temperatures of more than 30 degrees made the race even more difficult. Five riders formed the day’s break while all BORA – hansgrohe riders remained in the peloton. In the mountainous part in the middle of the stage, the race became very hectic, with the field splitting, but things rolled back together again before the finale. In a hectic and very fast bunch sprint, Martin Laas sprinted to third place behind Jordi Meeus and Max Kanter and scored the first podium spot for the German team at this year’s Czech Tour.

From the finish line

"Today was a pretty hard day in the saddle. I got dropped on the long climb in the middle of the stage but could fight my way back into the peloton again later. From then on I just tried to survive and stay in the front for the sprint finish. The sprint itself was very fast and dangerous, and at one point I had to stop pedalling for a short moment to avoid a crash. That’s why I think that maybe a bit more would have been possible. But, I’m very happy with my third place. I would like to thank my teammates who did a great job today to bring me through this tough day." – Martin Laas

"Today’s stage was way harder than expected but the riders did a great job. When the race became hectic in the hilly part, our general classification contenders were always in the front. Later, we focussed on the bunch sprint with Martin Laas. Unfortunately, he was blocked in and couldn’t find clean air in the final metres. We are still happy with his third place since it was our first podium spot here at the Czech Tour." – Jean-Pierre Heynderickx, Head Sports Director
