The Story behind the Photo Series: Felix Großschartner, winner of the Tour of Turkey
I can still remember very clearly how we were sitting in the bus before the start and it started to rain very heavily. But I actually knew that this would suit me because I like cold weather, and that gave me a certain degree of self-confidence.
When we reached the final climb, it was raining very hard and as soon as the slope kicked up, it just got colder and colder and I could barely feel my fingers. On top of that, I also had problems shifting gears over the last two kilometres, so I decided to ride the rest of the route in the big chainring. Ultimately, in spite of these problems, or perhaps because of them, I was so relieved to finally be able to drop the others on the climb, and that gave me a slight extra push to get over the final 200m.
Upon crossing the finish line, I finally raised my arms in celebration of the win. I had not only taken the stage, but also the overall classification of the Tour of Turkey - the first pro wins of my palmarès. Before the podium ceremony, when we were getting changed in the tent it was unbelievably cold. And throughout the ceremony itself, heavy fog and snowfall descended upon the stage. I really want to thank my teammates for the trust which they placed in me, and the work that they did to enable me to take my first career wins. It was truly one of the best weeks in my cycling career.
