Fast opening race of the season in Australia at the Schwalbe Classic

At the traditional curtain-raiser to the Tour Down Under, the Schwalbe Classic, the riders took on 30 laps of a pan flat 1.7km-long circuit through Adelaide's centre for a total of 51km. As expected, the race ended in a bunch sprint, but not before a small group of escapees tried to get away. The breakaway carved out a small advantage but after 25 laps of the circuit, they were forced to concede defeat. With two laps remaining, the BORA-hansgrohe riders once again came to the front of the peloton to set the increasingly high tempo. However, as C. Ewan launched his sprint, he was untouchable, with the local rider taking the win by several bike lengths.

From the finish line

“We had five riders taking part in this criterium who were riding for the first time in Australia. It was also our first race of the season and so we didn’t want to necessarily push it. The team rode for me and we tried to stay together, which we were able to do until the last few laps. Then I lost my position somewhat, and ended up crossing the line in 14th place. For me, it was a race on a new and high level, but we’ll try again over the coming days and maybe then we’ll have some more luck.” - Martin Laas

“It was a fast and hard criterium, with somewhat bad weather conditions, with it having rained for parts of the race. Due to the rain, we didn’t want to risk too much today. We tried to prepare the sprint for Martin Laas and Erik Baska, and our guys rode a good race for them. In the last lap, Erik suffered from a mechanical, and in the end, Martin took out 14th place. After the first race of the season, we’re now concentrating on the Tour Down Under in the upcoming week.” - Enrico Poitschke, Sportlicher Leiter
